I'll add my voice for what it's worth. Running Acrobat XI Standard on Windows 8 (not 8.1) and this problem randomly began asserting itself. I had seen it before when I was running Acrobat X Pro, but it resolved itself after a frustrating day or two. I do not have the Network DDE or DDE DSDM services on my system, and I did disable protected mode in the enhanced security settings, to no effect. Running a repair has solved the problem for now, but this seems pervasive enough that I'm sure we'd all love some input from Adobe.
